i had a great time camping, even with the heat(90's).. spent a bit of time sitting in a brook to stay cool on a few hot days, my dogs loved it.
had a coyote getting closer and closer to camp over a 3 day period. 1st 2 nights it didnt bug me or dogs it howled far enough away and didnt seem to come in closer. but 3rd night at 2am it let loose a howl so close (about 50 feet from tent), me and the puppy-lily got a little scared, my old aussie-morgan let out an answer = barking that might have ment shut up and bug off or else. (then we all sat there silently in tent waiting for a reply that never came, dogs ears moving like radar listening and me holding a can of bug spray and flashlight ready to protect us, its funny now but i was a little creeped out, i had been woke from a deep sleep thinking werewolfs lol)
the fact that it was howling means it wasnt planning harm/hunting us. he might have even been coming in closer quietly snooping campsite at times during the night? it was just letting us know he was around, maybe even checking to see if we was there, or tell us his boundary lines? well he got our answer via morgan and the next 2 nights i kept lanturns burning all night and a radio playing loud. didnt hear or see him after that.
we did hear racoons (dogs didnt bark at) also deer one morning grazed near tent.
also on the 1st day/night camping and last day/night we had a beaver that fasinated lily alot.
right where i placed tent on stream bank is a nice bend and a beaver had built a dam. lily kept watching him and wanting to go see closer. beaver slaped his tail.. gees they have a foot and a half long tail or it looks like when in water and it makes a big slap/boom when it hits water. on the last day lily tried wading out to beavers entrance, she just curious everything is a friendly citter in her mind.(minus the howling scare)
we picked up the chickens on way back.. 6.. was only going to get 4 but. 6 nice sweet friendly egglayer chickens are now here in little coop. going to get big winter one done soon.
so all in all had a very great time, ;D dogs had a blast, morgan is 10yrs old so this isnt new to her, she picks a spot and sets up her own day nest under a tree in brush, digs a hole hides her toys and food there and naps there. lily is only 6 months old and her 1st real adventure outing with mom and morgan. this vacation is a dogs dream vacation not just a people thing. a family vacation no matter the species.
